Tanzania Travel Essentials

Visas, money & practical information

Last reviewed 22 October 2026

From the Serengeti to Zanzibar’s coastline, a little practical preparation makes a remarkable journey feel easier. Regulations can change, and requirements depend on nationality and route, so use this guide as a starting point and check the official authorities before departure.

Passport and visa requirements

Travellers generally need a passport valid for at least six months, but exact rules depend on nationality and circumstances. Entry visa eligibility also varies. Tanzania’s official eVisa guidance lists an ordinary tourist visa at USD 50, typically valid for up to 90 days; US passport holders visiting for tourism are generally directed to a multiple-entry visa, listed at USD 100. Do not assume these categories apply to every traveller.

Use the official application portal and apply in good time. Follow the instructions for your nationality and retain your confirmation. A visa on arrival may be possible for eligible travellers, but availability should be checked rather than promised.

Preparation is part of the journey — documents, health and transfers.

Mandatory inbound travel insurance — important 2026 update

Since 1 October 2026, mainland Tanzania has introduced mandatory inbound insurance for foreign visitors within the applicable rules. Zanzibar already operates a mandatory scheme. Official notices identify NIC for travellers entering via mainland Tanzania and ZIC for travellers entering through Zanzibar. For journeys combining both, government and consular guidance indicates that one appropriately issued policy may cover the journey; the relevant entry point and current exceptions must still be checked.

The generally published adult premium is USD 44 for coverage up to 92 days, with rules and discounts depending on traveller category. This required inbound policy is not a replacement for comprehensive personal travel insurance, especially when considering trip cancellation, pre-existing conditions or other exclusions. Review exact policy terms and official instructions before paying.

Health and travel preparations

Consult a qualified travel-health professional well before departure to discuss vaccines, malaria prevention and individual needs. Yellow-fever certificate requirements can depend on travel history and transit routing, not just destination. Bring prescription medicines in their original packaging when practical, adequate sun and insect protection, and proof of relevant personal insurance.

Money and payments

The local currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). Some tourism services quote prices in US dollars, while local purchases may be easier in Tanzanian shillings. Cards are accepted at many larger tourism businesses but not everywhere, and network reliability varies. Carry a sensible amount of local cash, confirm payment methods ahead of time and use reputable exchange providers.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in many tourism settings but is personal and should reflect the service, length of stay and your circumstances. Ask your planner for destination-specific guidance rather than assuming a mandatory rate.

Language and culture

Swahili is Tanzania’s national language, and English is used widely in many travel settings. A few friendly words can enrich an encounter: Jambo (hello), Asante (thank you), Karibu (welcome) and Safari njema (have a good journey). Ask permission before photographing people and respect cultural and religious settings.

Arrivals and getting around

Common arrival points include Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. Transfers, domestic flights and safari road journeys depend on the route; some roads can be long or rough, especially after rain.

Electricity and connectivity

Tanzania generally uses 230V electricity and Type D and G sockets. A universal adaptor may be helpful. Wi-Fi availability and speed vary, particularly in remote camps; local SIM and eSIM options depend on device compatibility and provider coverage.
